The heart is a sophisticated muscular pump servicing two different circulations. Ultrasound examination is commonly used to determine both cardiac structure and function. This Silicone Plastinate is sectioned to provide apical four-chamber (A4C) / subcostal four-chamber (S4C) ultrasound view of the heart, including the atria, ventricles and valves. The differential structure of the left and right sides of the heart and their three-dimensional relationship are presented, alongside the course and territories of the coronary arteries, and the orientation, position, and morphology of the great and major systemic vessels. In addition, the orientation of the arterial outflows relative to the ventricles and septa can be directly visualised, thereby facilitating the study of cardiac embryology.

Typical Features

  • Cut along the apical four chamber plane (A4C) / subcostal four chamber plane (S4C), approximately parallel to the inferior surface of the heart, to reveal the atria and ventricles, and the atrioventricular valves.
  • Internal structure and features of the atria and ventricles, including trabecular parts of ventricles, smooth and pectinate parts of the atria, crista terminalis, septo-marginal trabecula, valve of inferior vena cava and triangle of atrioventricular node.
  • Position and morphology of the septa between the atria and ventricles, and of the fossa ovalis.
  • Inferior view of the aortic and pulmonary valves.
  • External structure and features of the atria and ventricles, including muscle fibre arrangement.
