Frequently Asked Questions

About Plastination

What is Plastination?

Plastination is the optimal method for preserving anatomical specimens for anatomical studies. Invented by scientist and anatomist Dr Gunther von Hagens in 1977, the plastination process extracts fluid and fat from tissues, and replaces them with polymers via vacuum-impregnation. Finally, the polymers are cured to make the tissues stable and robust.

Are Plastinates (HP, HS) and Bones (HB) made with real human tissue?

Yes. Silicone Plastinates (HP), Sheet Plastinates (HS) and Bones (HB) all contain real human tissue.

What are Silicone Plastinates (HP)?

Silicone Plastinates reveal real dissected (gross) human anatomy in captivating detail. They are dry, odour free, and safe to handle. Designed and dissected by expert anatomists, they provide unrivalled views of whole bodies, body regions, body systems or single organs.

Will Silicone Plastinates (HP) fit into my course or curriculum?

Silicone Plastinates facilitate modern evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning, and are suitable for a wide range (age and ability) of learners. They seamlessly integrate into any portfolio of learning opportunity and are ideal for supporting learning outcome attainment in non-traditional settings, including non-lab environments or alongside living subjects.

What are Sheet Plastinates (HS)?

Sheet Plastinates are thin cross-sections of the human body. They reveal real sectional anatomy in immersive detail and represent the highest levels of quality, detail and durability of cross-sectional anatomy available. Sheet Plastinates can be used to enhance learning and mastery in any anatomical or related discipline.

What are Anatomy Glass (HG)?

Anatomy Glass are thin cross-sections of the human body presented in a durable acrylic form. Free from human tissue, Anatomy Glass are available for use by anyone, anywhere.  The robust acrylic format withstands regular handling, is scratch resistant, and can be drawn on using non-permanent pens.

What is the difference between Sheet Plastinates (HS) and Anatomy Glass (HG)?

Sheet Plastinates are made from real human tissue and each slice is unique.  Anatomy Glass are durable high-resolution acrylic reproductions of Sheet Plastinates that contain no human tissue. Sheet Plastinates provide the highest levels of resolution and detail, whereas Anatomy Glass show good levels of detail and can be used by anyone, anywhere.

What is a Cast (HC)?

Casts demonstrate the shapes, patterns and interconnections of hollow structures within the body. Handmade via polymer injection of anatomical spaces within real human tissue, followed by a tissue removal technique, Casts illuminate the hidden world of hollow structure morphology, without the distraction of surrounding anatomy.

Do casts of the vascular system contain real blood?

No. Casts do not contain any human tissue or body fluids making them suitable for use by anyone, anywhere.

What is an embedded Cast?

Due to their fragility, Casts can be embedded in clear silicone within a glass case (cube-shaped embedding) or in a solid plastic surround shaped according to the related body part (anatomically-shaped embedding). Embedding is strongly recommended, particularly for Casts that will be moved and handled during teaching and learning.

What is the plastination process and how does it work?

The plastination process is described here.  More detailed information is available via the vHP Account area.

Origin of Specimens - Body Donation Program

Where does the human tissue used in von Hagens Plastination specimens come from?

von Hagens Plastination exclusively uses human tissue derived from body donors that have donated their body for plastination for anatomical and healthcare education. All donations are made in life under full and informed consent. The body donation program is managed by the Institute for Plastination and is subject to independent audit.

Why is there a charge for plastinated specimens when the human tissue is donated?

von Hagens Plastination does not sell or make a charge for human tissue. The costs associated with a qualified user acquiring human tissue containing specimens (HP, HS, HB) relate to the costs of production (e.g., person time, equipment, consumables and facilities), research, development, academic endeavor, customer engagement, and administrative and after-sales services. Every human specimen is hand crafted with care, with some taking 1500-2000h of work to complete.

Can I donate my body to the Institute for Plastination for use in Plastination?

Yes. Click here to learn more.

Use of Plastinates

How long will plastinated specimens last?

With proper handling and maintenance, plastinated specimens (HP & HS) will last indefinitely. The same is true of all our products, including Bones (HB), Anatomy Glass (HG) and Casts (HC).

Can Plastinates be touched with uncovered hands?

Yes. Both Silicone Plastinates (HP) and Sheet Plastinates (HS) are safe to touch, non-hazardous, and require no specialist facility or storage conditions. They can be used by anyone and within multiple types learning environment (e.g. lab, classroom, patient-areas). To minimize the transfer of dirt (from user-to-specimen), we recommend handling using gloves.

Can Sheet Plastinates and Anatomy Glass be projected?

Yes, they are translucent and can be used on overhead projectors!

Can human anatomy be learnt well using only electronic resources?

No. Electronic resources can supplement anatomical studies but cannot replace the benefit of studying real human tissue. Plastinates reveal real human anatomy from multiple and unique perspectives, facilitating a deeper comprehension of real morphology, relationships, functions, application and variance. Importantly, studying real human anatomy is personally connecting for learners, via the promotion of emotional engagement, and inherently demonstrating the real-world application of anatomical knowledge: these factors are essential to the learning process (1).

Can Silicone Plastinates (HP) replace dissection when learning anatomy?

Yes. Many international education institutions are choosing to replace dissection with Silicone Plastinates since they are highly effective as standalone resources and enhance learning efficiency by empowering learners to instantly focus on individual learning needs. Silicone Plastinates integrate seamlessly into any type of curriculum and learning process with minimal adaptation.

We teach by dissection and won’t change this – should we also consider using Silicone Plastinates (HP)?

Anatomical learning benefits from the use of multiple approaches, resources, view and techniques. Reliance on a single approach (e.g., dissection) is inefficient, ignores learner needs and ignores best practice learning theories. Silicone Plastinates can integrate seamlessly into a dissection-based course and offer unique and alternative views and routes for learning outcome attainment.

Can anyone acquire plastinated or human tissue-containing specimens?

No. Silicone Plastinates (HP), Bones (HB) and Sheet Plastinates (HS) contain real human tissue and can only be acquired by qualified users (i.e., trained individuals employed at reputable training institutions with appropriate governance) for use in anatomical and health-related education. Casts (HC) and Anatomy Glass (HG) do not contain human tissue and can be acquired and used by anyone, anywhere.

In what ways are Silicone Plastinates (HP) and Sheet Plastinates (HS) useful?

Silicone Plastinates and Sheet Plastinates reveal real human anatomy in captivating detail. Designed by expert anatomists, they provide unrivalled and complimentary views of human anatomy. They are safe to use and suitable for all ages of learner. Read more about Silicone Plastinates here.

Are Plastinates commonly used in anatomy-related education?

Yes. Numerous education institutions around the world, representing tens of thousands of learners, use Plastinates from von Hagens Plastination (vHP). Due to their high quality, and widely acceptable appearance, Plastinates from vHP are also used in international museums to educate the public about health and human anatomy.

Do Silicone Plastinates (HP) come with a stand?

Most Silicone Plastinates include a stand, although some do not - see individual product descriptions for details. Please contact us if you require a stand for a Silicone Plastinate that normally does not have one, or if you require modification to the stand provided.

Can you recommend which resources are required for a specific course (curriculum)?

Yes. We can advise on the types of resource required by a range of courses and can tailor this to a budget and number of students. Please contact us for recommendations related to your curriculum.
