The knee joint is a modified bicondylar synovial hinge joint that permits movement around three mutually perpendicular axes. A complex blend of joint surface geometry and soft tissue support provides an ideal combination of mobility and stability necessary for bipedal locomotion: the menisci help mitigate joint surface wear by serving as mobile soft tissue ‘bearings’. This Silicone Plastinate enables the structure and alignment of the knee joint to be visualized and explored alongside the joint capsule, associated ligaments and menisci, and their interconnections. The superior tibiofibular joint and the proximal part of the interosseous membrane of the leg are also revealed.
