Heartfelt Tribute: Guben Unveils Sculpture Honoring Dr. Gunther von Hagens

Guben, Germany – In a moving tribute to Dr. Gunther von Hagens, staff, friends, family, and residents of Guben gathered for the unveiling of a striking new sculpture—a heart-shaped monument dedicated to him on his 80th birthday.
The sculpture stands at about two meters and is a symbol of his vital contributions to the community. Originally designed by Dr. von Hagens fourteen years ago to promote the BODY WORLDS exhibition, the sculpture had been in storage until resident artist Andre Zink meticulously restored and refurbished it. The structure has now been painted with a bronze-like coating to ensure it remains weatherproof and a lasting landmark in the community.
Guben’s mayor, Fred Mahro, was present at the ceremony, expressing both gratitude and congratulations to Dr. von Hagens. “This sculpture serves as a lasting reminder of Gunther’s courage and unwavering commitment to making Guben a better place—creating jobs, enlivening our town, welcoming visitors from around the world, and introducing Guben to an international audience,” he said.
Since its opening in 2006, the plastination laboratory, the PLASTINARIUM, and von Hagens Plastination have been drawing global attention and solidifying the town’s reputation as a center for scientific innovation and cultural significance.
